Do you want to add a notification to an old post in WordPress? One of our users recently inquired about how they may automatically alert readers to outdated postings on their website. They had hundreds of old documentation items on hand, and they were concerned that some of them would be useless. We’ll show you how to add an old post notice to your WordPress blog in this article.
WordPress Notification for Old Posts
- In WordPress, there are three options for displaying old post notifications.
- Show an old post warning for any posts that are more than X days old.
- Mark posts as outdated and display a warning Display the most recent update date
We will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each approach after having dealt with it ourselves at WPBeginner.
-
WordPress’s Automated Outdated Post Message
In this method, you use a plugin to display an obsolete post message on all WordPress posts that are older than a certain number of days (say, two years).
Install and activate the Juiz Outdated Post Message plugin to accomplish this. To configure the plugin, go to Settings » Outdated Post Message after it’s been activated.
You can personalize the message and pick the number of days after an article should be declared old.
Below the general options are the display settings, which allow you to select the post types for which the old posts message should be displayed, as well as the position of the message.
By changing the post and altering the old message choices box, you may also disable outdated messages for selected posts.
Advantages and disadvantages of this method:
The greatest advantage is automation. If you set the time limit to a high enough value, such as two years, your content is likely to be obsolete, especially if you’re in a fast-paced area like technology.
The disadvantage is that when it comes to content, there is no one-size-fits-all option. There will always be evergreen topics, such as our post on shared web hosting.
As a result, you’re losing visitors by showing an out-of-date message on a perfectly decent content.
-
Manually Updated WordPress Post Message
This method, like the last one, displays an out-of-date post notice, but it isn’t automatic. Instead, you must explicitly mark a post as outdated in order for the notice to appear.
You can utilize an old post notification plugin. After you’ve engaged the feature, go to Settings » Old Post Notification to modify your message.
Following that, you can mark each individual post as Old and even write a custom message directly from the post edit panel.
dvantages and disadvantages of this method:
The main advantage is that you can manually decide which postings are old and even personalize the message that is no longer relevant.
For the most part, this is an excellent option. The only drawback, and it isn’t a major one, is that it isn’t automatic.
We’d take the manual option over the automatic solution any day, given the risk of real posts being labelled as outdated.

Dates of the most recent update
This solution is quite unique. Instead of displaying an out-of-date post message, you simply display the most recent update date for every given post.
It makes perfect sense for a site like WPBeginner, where we are always going back and amending articles, to display the last updated date, which is different from the Published date.
Visitors may see when the article was last updated to see how current it is.
This approach has the same advantages as choice #2. The absence of a sizable warning message is the only distinction.
All right, we hoped this article would assist you in alerting readers about outdated posts on your WordPress blog.
